EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence based therapy utilizing eight phases of treatment for trauma and complex trauma. Arena EMDR is the application of EMDR therapy with horses as partners in the process, using the EquiLateral Protocol which was created by Sarah Jenkins, MS, LPC, CPsychol, an EMDRIA approved Consultant and Trainer.
Arena EMDR is highly specialized, experiential and easily adaptive. It is customizable to the individual and their unique presentation of symptoms and circumstances.
There are a number of benefits to having horses as partners in EMDR therapy.
The presence of the horses helps the nervous system to re-tune and re-balance, helping to keep the client present in the here and now. Horses are completely accepting and non-judgmental in their response and feedback offering support and connection throughout the phases of EMDR.
Horses provide the client an avenue to relearn trust in others and themselves. Because horses are social animals, being invited to interact with them overcomes isolation and supports re-engagement in the present, increasing confidence and the capacity to think.
Horses live in a herd and model non-predatory, positive group behavior.
Arena EMDR can be scheduled as weekly sessions or Intensives
All Arena EMDR packages include a clinical assessment, treatment planning and follow up
