No. We will ask you about your experience and comfort level as a way to help guide use of the most beneficial exercises and application of EMDR.
While equine therapy can benefit individuals with autism, our program specifically specializes in trauma treatment using equine assisted EMDR. Our expertise and training are focused on trauma recovery rather than autism support.
The EMDR practice and inclusion of all eight phases is the same. The difference is that it is applied in an active and experiential setting with horses, therapist and an equine specialist as partners in the process.
o If you have felt “stuck” in your progress or have had difficulty moving through difficult material
o If you have a tendency to filter your verbal communication on difficult topics
o If you enjoy being outdoors and in a natural environment
o If you prefer experiential and active engagement
o If you feel “alone” and would benefit from additional support during the process
To ensure safety, effectiveness, and appropriate care for all involved, we have the following guidelines regarding readiness for treatment:
We consider equine assisted EMDR to be an advanced form of treatment that is often adjunct to other mental health services. We may ask that you have engaged in prior treatment or are currently in therapy or treatment with a primary provider. If you have questions about whether you meet these prerequisites, please contact us to discuss your specific situation.
Riding is not a part of Arena EMDR. Observation and a variety of ground exercises are used
There will always be an equine specialist and a licensed therapist present. There are several different horses that may be used. Exercises and interactions with the horses are incorporated into all phases of EMDR.

Corporate and Business Organization
Organizations facing multiple challenges in today's world can benefit from equine assisted team building as it provides "interactive experiential leadership and team development programs designed to strengthen the social and emotional intelligence needed for leaders and team members to be more effective, self-aware, and accountable." These programs are particularly valuable when traditional approaches to development aren't yielding the desired results.
Sports Teams
Sports teams can experience transformational change through equine assisted learning. These programs help team members understand their roles and the importance of fulfilling them.
Healthcare Teams
Healthcare teams dealing with high-stress environments often benefit from equine assisted team building to improve communication, reduce burnout, and enhance collaboration skills.
Executive Leadership Teams
Executive leadership teams can enhance their skills by learning about herd behavior, how horses communicate. During interactions with the horses, leadership skills will be challenged and there are many metaphors that emerge for application in the workplace.
Military and First Responder Teams & Peer Support
Teams in high-stress professions like military units and first responder groups often benefit from the emotional intelligence and stress management skills developed through equine assisted learning.
Terri and Laura will be the primary facilitators. Certified equine specialists may also be on site to assist, depending on the size and needs of your team.
No, typically there is no riding in equine assisted team building. All work with horses is done on the ground. Working with horses on the ground enables participants to form a more authentic relationship with the horse without the interference of bridles and saddles.
